Peter Chen is a China-based fine art landscape photographer and architect whose practice spans nearly two decades. His work is widely recognized for its synthesis of Eastern ink-inspired aesthetics and Western visual expression, exploring the relationship between light, space, and the spiritual dimension of nature.
Chen began his engagement with landscape photography in 2005. In the early years of his practice, he consistently undertook long-distance self-driven expeditions across remote regions of China, including the Tibetan Plateau, Qinghai, Kekexili, and other uninhabited territories. These formative experiences established a foundation rooted in direct immersion, physical exploration, and sustained observation of natural environments.
Over the past decade, Chen has worked as an independent landscape photographer, creating bodies of work across diverse geographic regions worldwide, from the Arctic and Antarctic to Africa, North and South America, Oceania, the Mediterranean, and Northern Europe. Rather than documenting locations, his practice focuses on transforming natural forms into visual metaphors, emphasizing atmosphere, spatial tension, and the expressive power of light.
Since 2019, Chen’s artistic language has evolved toward a more expressive and contemplative approach. His work integrates the poetic abstraction of traditional Chinese ink painting with the sensibility of Western Impressionism, dissolving literal representation in favor of ambiguity, rhythm, and emotional resonance. Through controlled tonal structures and symbolic uncertainty, his images invite viewers into a meditative visual experience rather than a descriptive landscape.
In July 2024, Chen presented a major solo exhibition titled Ink Realm at the National Art Museum of China. Thirteen black- and-white works from the exhibition were acquired into the museum's permanent collection. His works have also been collected by public institutions, including the Dali Museum.
Chen has received international recognition, including awards from the Global Chinese Photography Awards (GCPA), and his work has been published in leading photography and cultural publications. He is a member of the Shenzhen Photographers Association, Shenzhen Artists Association, and the Singapore Watercolour Society.
